About Our Schools

Public Schools

The Hastings-on-Hudson Union Free School District, which includes the Village of Hastings-on-Hudson and a portion of the Town of Greenburgh, consists of three schools: Hillside Elementary, Farragut Middle and Hastings High. Each school strives for, and achieves, academic excellence. At all grade levels, our students consistently perform at the highest level on local, statewide, and national tests. These results place them among the top performers in Westchester, a county with some of the finest schools in the nation. Over 90% of our graduates enroll in a wide range of private and state colleges and universities.

Extra-curricular activities are an integral part of the school experience. Over 70% of the student body participates in a wide variety of programs. Annually, many students gain recognition for their contributions as musicians, artists, and athletes. Additionally, ours is a caring school system. Individual needs are understood and addressed. We are proud to be large enough to offer a rich and varied curriculum and small enough to know and care about each student.

One of the unique features of the Hastings School District is the close working relationship of the Board of Education, the staff, the students and community members. Residents are active in the educational system: they participate in the PTSA, volunteer for school activities, and serve on committees. Staff members actively promote parental involvement in the educational process.

Parochial School

St. Matthews School serves children from Kindergarten through eighth grade.

Institutions

Four schools providing care and education for dependent children are located in or near Hastings: The Graham School and the Andrus Home on Broadway near the Yonkers City line, and St. Christopher's School and Children's Village in Dobbs Ferry. Some students from Graham, Andrus and St. Christopher's are enrolled in the public schools with tuition costs being met by the agency. Enrollment from Children's Village is limited to children of the professional staff.

Nursery Schools

The very young can enjoy many of five nursery school programs: The Hastings Cooperative Nursery on Old Jackson Avenue, Pilgrim Childcare and Hilltop Nursery held at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Happy Harbor held at the North Yonkers Community Church, and Hastings Village Nursery held at the Community Center. Eighteen more preschool programs are held nearby.

Intervillage Continuing Education Program

This ongoing educational program has many exciting courses and events for adults in Hastings, Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, and Irvington. Concerts, opera, drama, walking tours, landmark visits, art, quilting, painting, flower arranging and botany, folk music, instrument instructions, movies, typing, computer, career skills, personal finance management, sign language and foreign languages, cooking, dancing, fitness and health, bridge playing, and defensive driving are all included. Taking these classes is a great way for newcomers to meet neighbors with similar interests.
