10/09 - "Good Old Urbanism - Part 5 - Portland ME I recently returned from a long trip that was also a very easy trip. As I reflect on my journey, I realize that the smooth logistics were entirely due to the confluence of efficient mass transit with a city that's compact and completely walkable.
BEST PLACES TO SHOP & WALK Local shopping for unique clothing and gifts. Places where walking downtown is fun. Cafes with great food and ambience. Walking around parks and beaches.
So much of what makes architecture endlessly absorbing is the particularity of each project. And, although a designer gains both depth and breadth of expertise over the course of a long career, no one can keep everything in his or her head. That's where the fun of delving into special topics comes into play.
10/2/09 "Best Shopping Towns" It's so much fun to discover the ins and outs of a new town. Or to return to a favorite place and see what shops and restaurants are still there, new, or gone. Way before the age of the blog, I've kept personal visual journals in my head of my favorite towns . . .
